Vice President, Engineering
Huntsville Utilities
Stacy Cantrell presently serves as the Vice President of Engineering at Huntsville Utilities, where her team supports regional development by designing water, gas, and electric utility infrastructure for both immediate and long-term needs for the residents of Madison County.
Stacy grew up in north Alabama and in North Carolina with her 2 younger sisters and younger brother, attending North Carolina State to earn a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1988. After graduation she worked at Florida Power and Light in south Florida for 7 years where she held various positions in district level engineering services, division level planning, and corporate level reliability. During this time Stacy was involved in her first significant storm duty after Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of south Florida in 1992, earned her Master of Science in Engineering Management from the University of South Florida in 1994, and welcomed her first son a few months later in 1994.
Relocating to Huntsville Alabama in 1995, Stacy began her career with Huntsville Utilities as an Electrical Engineer. She has worked various positions in engineering, operations, and the dispatch center. Stacy helped manage the restoration efforts after the April 2011 tornados and has helped guide Huntsville Utilities through major fundamental changes including implementation of the infrastructure design and mapping system, work order accounting system, fiber communications build, and intelligent metering.
The first and only members of their families to earn college degrees, Stacy’s parents ensured that all 4 children would also graduate from college. Her father was the plant engineer at a wood siding plant, and Stacy’s mother worked to earn her master’s degree in Early Childhood Education after all 4 children had grown. Both parents were active in the community and involved the whole family in volunteer activities and later international missions.
Stacy is a graduate of Diversity Leadership Colloquium Cohort VII and of the Leadership Greater Huntsville’s flagship program L-32.
An avid runner and triathlete, Stacy often volunteers for these types of events and supporting efforts. She has organized over a dozen wheel-chair ramp builds with volunteers from Huntsville Utilities. Stacy has two sons (Jacob and Justin) and a stepdaughter (Kayleigh).
